Our Beginnings

Founded in 1856, five years prior to Kansas achieving statehood, Exchange Bank & Trust is headquartered in the rolling hills of northeastern Kansas along the Missouri River.

In its earliest days, the Bank played a key role in assisting pioneers who settled in the region, as well as others migrating farther west to reestablish their roots. As a result, the area proliferated with a growing populace, along with the establishment of several businesses and institutions — retail, industrial, professional, educational, medical, religious, etc. — many of which are still in existence.

Farming operations likewise abounded, supported by the Bank’s foresight and understanding of the needs and potential of agricultural enterprises in this corner of the state. As farms increasingly dotted the landscape, this development gradually gave rise to a number of sizable grain storage and processing facilities, as well as important grain and livestock shipping terminals using river and rail transportation.

Soldiers at nearby Ft. Leavenworth, which became the most significant military outpost in the western half of the U.S. when Kansas was still just a territory, also had the option of benefiting from the Bank’s trustworthy and convenient services.

Taking all of this into account, the far-reaching role that Exchange Bank performed in contributing to the settlement of America’s western frontier is evident. The Bank’s founding proved to be critical to the burgeoning establishment and recognition of the northeast Kansas-northwest Missouri region as a residential, business, educational, military service, agricultural and transportation hub, then and now.
